When I pick G up in the afternoon, he is very tired. He wasn't used to this kind of training. He loves it, but it does tire him quite a bit. He plays soccer at home like I said, but that is more in a pick up league. He isn't used to having practice every day and for this amount of time. Of course, once school starts, he will have less practice time. He fell asleep on the couch last night. Then he went to his room to look at some new guitar music he bought. The next time we saw him, he had come out to tell us he fell asleep in his room, and he was going to bed for the night. He didn't want us to think he was being anti-social. We already figured that he was asleep, but it was nice that he came out to tell us. Things here are going good so far. It is also nice that G will have many friends by the time school starts. That really does help with the transition.

Football
Well, G is now an official member of the football team. He started practicing in full pads on Tuesday afternoon. He is enjoying it very much. He is trying out different positions and loving it. So far he has tried wide receiver, strong safety, free safety, and linebacker. He must be showing promise because they haven't had him just go to kicking yet. He is a soccer player in Brazil. At some point, they will see how he kicks. For now, he is showing some promise at playing other positions. We will see how he does. He doesn't care if he ever plays in a real game. He just wants to be a part of the football team.

First Few Days
This will probably get long since I have been to busy the past few days to blog. I guess the best place to start is the pickup. I had to drive to Newark to go pick G up. His local coordinator also went, but we took separate cars because her daughter and friends wanted to meet G. If I ever needed a reminder on why I don't miss NJ, it was this trip. Everything was going as planned until I hit construction 15 minutes from where G was located. That 15 minutes to over an hour to complete. K, his LC, was behind me and it took her even longer to get to the hotel. We opted to pick him up at the hotel. His organization offered to send him to one of the airports that were a little closer to us, but the flight plan was crazy. I couldn't see sending him half way around the country just to save us 40 minutes of driving. I got to the hotel and found G in the lobby playing his guitar for some of the kids that were waiting for their turn to be taken over to the airport, so that they can take flights to their host cities and towns. One poor girl was so nervous she couldn't speak. We waited until K got there. T was with me. He saw the indoor pool and wanted to go swimming. We spent a long time listening to him saying pool. Finally K made it and we off to get something to eat. We ate at the Olive Garden for lunch and then went the rest of the way home.
G was amazed by the size of our property. He lives in a condo in Brazil, so the idea of having land and a large yard was foreign to him. Mind you we have a nice sized property, but it isn't huge by some American standards. He loved being able to run around after T outside. We waited for L to get home from work. He couldn't take the day off to go pick up G. I made grilled chicken and zucchini for dinner, and we just took the time to get to know one another.
Friday, we went to see my parents. My brother was in town, and since he doesn't get up this way often we went to see him. My family likes to play cards. G taught us Truco. It is a trick playing game. We had a lot of fun playing that. Friday night we just relaxed around the house and enjoyed each other's company. G also played his guitar for us. I can already tell that is something that I am going to miss when he heads home. He is very good and it is nice listening to him play.
Saturday we went to the county fair. We had a nice time showing it to G. He didn't expect it to be as big as it was. We also watched the lawnmower races that they had in the afternoon there. That was interesting for him to watch. He then went with his LC to ride the fair rides. She brought him home after they were done. T was getting tired so we left early so he wasn't cranky later on that night.
Sunday was a big washout. It rained all day. G played his guitar in his room for a bit and then we played pool for a couple of hours and had a great time. We have also spent a lot of time discussing differences between the countries. G is amazed with our commercials here. In Brazil, it is against the law to use your competitors name in commercials. He was surprised to see Pepsi commercials making fun of Coke. He also has enjoyed being able to watch all the preseason football games. He watches American football in Brazil. He is a Patriots fan which is something we have to break him of since this household is made up of Steeler fans. It is nice that he watches all the same sports we do. He knew the basics of baseball, so we are teaching him the finer points and aspects of it.
I forgot to mention that we had the discussion of rules on Friday. Turns out he has the same exact rules at home that we do in our household. We gave him his list of chores and he added one that he does at home that we didn't give him. He also didn't bring a computer with him. We have two in the house, so he is using ours. He asked to use it, but, by his own admission, he really isn't a computer kid. He goes on occasionally, but he doesn't live on FB or those type of sites. That is the complete opposite of our last exchange student. I don't think that we will run into the problems that the internet can cause, especially since he doesn't have a computer in his room.
Yesterday was G's appointment to pick classes. That went great. He has certain classes that he has to take here in the states so he can graduate once he goes home. He will be in the junior class here. It didn't matter to his home school what grade he was in as long as he took their required courses. Because of that, it freed him to take more fun electives since he didn't have to try and jam in all the PA state requirements to graduate. I think he will enjoy everything he has picked to take.
He also has joined the football team. We did have to get his father to run to his doctor's office to pick up a letter stating that he was just in for an exam and is in good health. That way, he doesn't need to get a physical here to play sports. His father e-mailed me the letter and he can start practicing in this afternoon's practice. This morning he is just watching the team run plays. It will be interesting to see what he thinks of football practice once he gets home. This also gets us into a routine before school starts. Practice is the same hours school is, so he will get used to that. He also is making some friends already from the team. That will be helpful to him once he starts school. I think we are well on our way to a great exchange year.

He's in the US!
Well, late last night Brazil time, G left to start his journey to the US. He flew from Sao Paulo to Miami. From Miami, he flew to the NY area to have his orientation. We did get word from him that he made it safe and sound. The only wrinkle is that their tour of NYC got cancelled today because of rain. They started their actually orientation part early and will go tomorrow on the tour instead of having the orientation that they are doing tonight instead.
His e-mail was enthusiastic. He is very laid back. Up until a few days ago, you couldn't rally sense any excitement from him. We didn't skype with him. All of our conversation has been on FB. It is hard to gauge someone's tone of voice through IMs. You could tell today that he was excited in everything that he wrote.
I am picking up his Local Coordinator Thursday morning and we are going to pick him up at the hotel he is staying. I am very excited to actually meet him in person, and make him a true member of the family. It will nice to finally have him in the home. I am glad that he gets the chance to go sight seeing during his orientation, especially since he will be seeing all the main sights of New York. He should have much fun doing that, and I know he has already made some friends. It is hard to believe that in less than 48 hours he will actually be in the house.

We Pick Him up a Day Early
Surprise! We pick G up a day earlier than originally thought. From what was said originally we thought we were getting him this Friday. Got the real word today that instead we are picking him up at the hotel the orientation is in on Thursday morning. So much for that laid back approach I was taking. Even though there is one day difference, it makes a huge difference on getting everything done before I have to leave and get him.
I officially registered him at the school today as planned. That was quick and easy. I picked up the papers last week and filled them out over the weekend. I was in an out in a matter of minutes.
I have to wash the sheets and comforter on G's bed. We have had guests here the past couple of weeks. His room in our guest room when we don't have an exchange student in it. I also want to vacuum that room. I swear J may have been gone since January, but I am still finding pieces of paper and wrappers that he had left on the floor when he left. It amazes me how long his presence is felt long after he is gone. He also broke one of the shades in the bedroom that I just discovered. He was known to do things like that and not tell us. I want to get that fixed before G gets here. Other than the regular house cleaning I do, there isn't much other than that to get done.
G leaves Sao Paolo tonight at 11:30. He already messaged me numerous times with the list of things he is bringing. He wants to make sure he doesn't forget something that he needs. He has been packed since the weekend. He just keeps double checking himself. I would rather he do that than have him get here without something important. It does make it a little more exciting now that he will be here in a couple of days. I am looking forward to his arrival.

Not Nesting
I have read on some of the blogs about some host parents nesting. I will admit that I nested a lot last year. This year, with the exception of buy a new comforter because J ripped the one I bought last year for that bed, I haven't done much to nest. The bedroom is pretty much the way it was when J left. Obviously, I have vacuumed the room, but haven't done much else. It was in pretty good shape.
I did go and buy some of the school supplies I knew G needed. That way he doesn't have to worry about getting them. We have the house key we are giving him on a soccer key chain. I also bought some small American flags to decorate the bin we have to put his supplies. I did order US flag guitar picks for him, but they have not arrived yet. He is an avid guitar player, so I thought that would be something he would like.
The other things L and I are working on is the ground rules and what they are going to be. Some of the issues we ended up having were based on lack of ground rules. J had chores, but that was basically it. When other things started being a problem, we had to start considering to take privileges away. That is when things really started to sour because J could not see that it was for his own good. One of the big things I will suggest to all of you who are new or haven't hosted in the age of social media, limit their time on the computer. I think there is someone else I know who reads this blog that can agree on that. Do it from the very beginning. The program we are hosting through this year has told the kid 30 minutes of computer time a day. They also suggest sending e-mail once a week with what they did to family and friends. We are going to increase the computer time to one hour which we can do. The 30 minutes is a suggestion. We aren't going above that though for a long time. There are so many social sites in different countries it was impossible to block them all. This way we have it up front what the rules are. The more time they spend talking to home not only hurts the host family unit, but it makes themselves miserable. They can't get the full experience out of their exchange if they can't let go of home.
One of the other things that I do suggest is everyone to learn about their kid's host country and culture. Some of the issues we had were cultural. J, coming from a country where independence is given at a real young age, wasn't happy about having rules. Now, some of his things weren't exactly true cultural but exaggerations of what his parents thought of their culture. J had no rules at home.....none......his parents already saw him basically as an adult. He could come and go as he pleased. We didn't do a good job preparing him for having to have rules. Of course, we didn't know the extent of it until he got here, but I do feel we could have done better. Even if your kids have rules at home, they are probably going to be different than at your house. Explain that to them and why. Don't just tell them the rule. Give them an explanation of the reason behind the rule. They will understand it a lot better that way.
One of the other things we are doing this time is going to have G call us Mom and Dad. We didn't do that with J. One of the biggest issues by J's own admittance was he never saw us as authority figures. He saw us more like siblings. He said if he called us Mom and Dad he felt he would have gotten it in his head better. Depending on your age, you may be closer in age to siblings than your child's parents. That was the case with us. J treated us like were his siblings. We are going with Mom and Dad because of the connotation that it brings.
For those of you with younger children, especially toddlers, make sure your host kid understands what it is like being around kids that age. If you can do it before they come great. If not, do it when they get there. We made the mistake of taking a youngest child who had never been around younger children. Once the novelty of the big sibling wears off, there are going to be problems arising. Make sure your host child knows that you will discipline your toddler. Also, explain that sometimes you have to cater to the toddler's needs to keep things from escalating. I would go into an explanation of how when they were little their parents had to do the same things. This time we are more fortunate that G has a sibling much younger. He is the oldest, and has many cousins around T's age. We will still explain some of these things to him as every child is different. T is normally really laid back, but he is two and sometimes he acts like most two-year-olds.
I hope that most of this information is helpful. I know it doesn't apply to everyone. I hope some can learn from our mistakes. I look forward to everyone's journey, and I hope you all enjoy ours.

We are doing it again
Well, for those who are new and need an introduction to our family, I am K a stay at home mom. L is my husband. T is our two year old son. We hosted last year a boy from Germany. This year we are hosting G from Brazil.
Our hosting experience last year didn't end the way we had hoped. That being said I met and became friends with many wonderful host mom. We even started an unofficial club. This year we are hosting with a different organization than we did last year. Even though our previous organization has a great reputation, and they were many people who were good to us there were some reasons that required a change. We look forward to to working with the new organization and have enjoyed working with them.
We learned a lot from our last hosting experience. We have realized some mistakes that we have made. I do think that I can be resource to people others since we went through so much last year. That being said, we do realize that every experience is different. One kid is not like another. That is why we decided to do this again. We are just going into this experience much wiser.
We have talked to G. He just turned 17. He is the oldest in his family. His sister is much younger than he is. He loves music and sports, so he will fit right in this family. What is interesting this time around is that Brazilians follow many of the US sports. WE had to teach J last year about baseball and American football. G follows those sports. I will have to get over the fact he is somehow a Patriots fan, but we won't throw him out over that. He will be a junior here, but is actually doing his senior year here. This year does count for him, and he will receive his diploma in Brazil once he returns. G plays the guitar. He asked us if he could bring it with him. We told him that he could. We are looking for him to arrive next Friday. I am also looking forward to sharing our journey with everyone.
